Job Overview

The Network Optimization Engineer will be responsible for planning, designing, and optimizing MTN’s radio access network (RAN) and core transport infrastructure in the Nhlangano region. This role involves detailed analysis of network performance data, implementation of optimization techniques, and close collaboration with field teams to enhance coverage, capacity, and quality of service. Key Responsibilities

• Analyze network performance metrics, drive root‑cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to improve KPIs such as drop call rate, throughput, and latency.
• Design and execute drive‑test campaigns, collect RF data, and use optimization software to fine‑tune antenna parameters, handover settings, and load balancing.
• Collaborate with radio planning, RF engineering, and field deployment teams to ensure seamless integration of new sites and technology upgrades.
• Develop and maintain optimization documentation, SOPs, and best‑practice guidelines for the Nhlangano region.
• Monitor and report on network health, providing actionable insights to senior management and cross‑functional stakeholders.
• Participate in 5G trial deployments, evaluate performance, and recommend enhancements for future rollouts.
• Support emergency response and network recovery efforts during major incidents or natural disasters.

Required Skills

• Proficiency with network optimization tools such as Atoll, Mentum Planet, or similar platforms.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret large data sets and translate findings into practical solutions.
• In‑depth knowledge of LTE, 4G, and emerging 5G technologies, including RF principles and antenna theory.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, capable of working with cross‑functional teams and external vendors.
• Project management experience, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight deadlines.
• Familiarity with MTN’s network architecture and standards is a plus.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline is required. Advanced certifications such as Cisco CCNP, Nokia NRS, or Huawei HCIA are advantageous but not mandatory.

Experience

Applicants must have a minimum of five years of hands‑on experience in telecom network optimization, preferably within a mobile operator environment. Experience with both rural and urban network scenarios in Sub‑Saharan Africa is highly valued.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 250,000 to SSP 350,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, and a retirement savings plan.
